DJ – Cancer survivor and another ‘Suit on a Bike’
May 24th, 2012 § Leave a Comment
Darren John Aquilina – former mad track sprinter, now mad road cyclist. DJ is also a cancer survivor and is an active participant with the Tour de Cure gang.
I had arranged in the past to meet up to do the 2nd in a series of ‘Suits on a Bike”. Sometimes work just gets in the way. Whilst chatting about meeting at Walsh Bay yesterday, I asked him about the different Tour coloured jerseys different people wear. I’m sure the Tour de Cure website has a good explanation what the jerseys mean and DJ said he has a ‘Pink’ one.
After mentioning the also had a pink tie, my idea of DJ riding in his suit in traffic changed…
(The awesome track bike was resting outside a restaurant near where we met.)

Wet Macquarie Pass
May 3rd, 2012 § Leave a Comment
During the recent rainy school holidays, I arranged with Craig McGee of McGee’s Cycling in Bowral to meet a local rider Daniel at Robertson, for a quick Macquarie Pass photo shoot, hopefully in the mist and rain.
Arriving the the top at 7am, conditions were perfect – rain and fog. Nautrally by our meeting time at 7.30am, the rain stopped and the fog cleared. Images are a prelude to another shoot later (June/July) around the Southern Highlands.
If you are not familiar with the Macquarie Pass, it starts inland from the coast, just south of Wollongong. A few kms from the summit is Robertson, then about 20 minutes drive to Moss Vale, Bowral and beyond. Here’s some details:
Total Distance:
7.67km | 4.77mi
Starting Altitude:
67m | 220ft
Finishing Altitude:
584m | 1,916ft
Average Gradient: 7.2%
Elevation Gain:
517m | 1,696ft
Have a look at www.cycle2max.com to see some more details and their member climb times. Fastest here is just over 20 minutes, which must have been a fearsome effort.
